A city between land and sea

The charm of the sea and the industriousness of the land conquered the visitor fascinated by a lively town, considered one of the most prosperous town in Puglia, thanks to its commercial activities, trade and tourism.
The sea has always represented an important resource demonstrated by the port, the ancient starting point for crusaders in the Holy Land, today’s commercial hub of great importance and charm.

Get lost in the alleys of the old town is for the visitor the best way to grasp the secret soul of the city: on one side the blue sea, in the area around the cathedral, on the other, in the area known as “old”, traditionally inhabited by farmers, the celebration of the earth and its products.

Wander the streets of the old town, such as Via Duomo and Via Ettore Fieramosca, to admire the beautiful buildings and stop at one of the local nightlife.

Strolling in the merchant area, full of shops, inns and restaurants you can enjoy local food and wine: seafood and land come together in the rich menu of old and new flavors to be discovered.

Challenge but not limited to: history and great artistic vocation.

Barletta has ancient origins.
The first historical evidence dates back to classical times (IV – III century. BC).

Medieval instead its urban core, which developed in the Norman period.
There are different dominations that have succeeded: by the Normans, Swabians, Angevins to the Aragonese to the Spaniards.

The Barletta name is linked to the epic Challenge which saw Italian and French opposed in 1503 and every year is the subject of a suggestive commemoration in deeply felt costume.

Even contemporary history has left an indelible mark as evidenced by the honors of Civil Merit (1998) – for the proud resistance to Nazism – and for Valor (2004).

barletta_01Barletta, recognized as a city of art by the Region of Puglia in 2005 for its architectural beauty, has beautiful mansions, medieval churches, a Swabian castle among the most beautiful of Apulia, the Curci Theatre and the sumptuous Palazzo Della Marra, the guardian of the works Giuseppe De Nittis, Impressionist painter known worldwide.

The typical hospitality and charm of Puglia, accompanied by an extensive architectural presence, make Barletta a city with a strong tourist vocation in which to walk is equivalent to making a real journey through history, art, culture and in the traditions of Puglia authentic.
